Woodbrook Vale School

English, Media and Drama

At Woodbrook Vale School we are passionate about providing our students with the tools to build the brightest future for themselves. As a faculty, we believe wholeheartedly that our faculty plays an integral role in this, offering opportunities for students to be creative, imaginative, and curious. It prepares students for the wider world by giving them powerful knowledge and the access to cultural capital. Our units and lessons are carefully planned and sequenced, in addition to being appropriately differentiated to meet the needs of all students.

English

At Woodbrook Vale, we aim to deliver an English curriculum that is ambitious, diverse, and challenging. We believe that the texts we study should be representative of the student body, allowing students to feel seen, and also empower them to enjoy the best of the rich culture that the canon of literature provides. All students have access to the same texts, regardless of their starting point. This allows opportunity for reading, writing, and discussion, with content that piques the curiosity of students across both key stages. At our core, we want our passion and enthusiasm for the subject to inspire students and help them to foster a love of English and learning.

At GCSE, we study the Edexcel English Language and English Literature specifications.

Drama

Students have access to a broad and ambitious Drama curriculum, which embeds skills and knowledge of the theatre and performance process. This allows them to develop a love of the performing arts. Not only does the subject develop transferable skills but it enables students to utilise their creativity and imagination through such performance.

At GCSE, we study the AQA drama specification

Media Studies

Media Studies will develop students' critical understanding of the media's influence on society by fostering media literacy and analytical skills, in addition to applying these skills towards creative production. The goal is for students to deconstruct media messages and understand the theoretical frameworks of media language, industry, audience, and representation. They will become informed, critical, and creative participants in a media-saturated world.

At GCSE, we study the Eduqas Media Studies specification

Creative iMedia

iMedia GCSE provides students with a comprehensive understanding and practical skills for the creative digital media sector, covering the entire media production process from pre-production to the creation of multimedia products. It aims to develop creative and practical skills through a blend of coursework and exams. Students will build transferable skills like research, planning, communication, and collaboration, ultimately preparing them for careers in digital media or further vocational education.
